Sunlight exposure has also been associated with serotonin regulation, which helps explain the mood-supportive effects many people notice when they spend consistent time outdoors. Some researchers are also exploring connections between light exposure and mitochondrial signaling — the energy production machinery inside your cells. The body’s relationship with sunlight is genuinely multidimensional, and this is part of why no supplement fully replicates the experience of being outside.

How Can Fresh Air and Outdoor Movement Support the Nervous System?

One of the most common things I hear when this topic comes up is a version of: “But I thought we were supposed to avoid the sun.” It is a fair concern, and it reflects decades of public health messaging that emphasized sun avoidance without always distinguishing between excessive, burning exposure and sensible, intentional outdoor time. That distinction matters significantly.

The goal of healthy sun exposure is not to burn. Excessive UV exposure — particularly repeated sunburns — is associated with increased risk of premature skin aging, DNA damage, and skin cancer. That is a real concern, and it is worth taking seriously. But the answer is not complete avoidance. It is balance, and the right balance looks different for every person depending on skin tone, age, geographic location, time of year, and individual health history.
